A Series of Dognappings This project, A Series of Dognappings, is a response to my question: What does it really mean to “use time wisely”? When I was two years old, I declared “napping” a waste of time, and ever since then the concept has held no place in my daily routine. The only time I allow myself the luxury of napping is when I am a passenger in a car, plane, or train. I suppose it is because even though I am not getting much done, I am still getting to a destination so I am accomplishing something. It is not as if procrastination is a stranger to me. I have had so many afternoons lost to the internet, or evenings lost to television. The sentence “I will try not to be such a putzer” was even part of the wedding vows I wrote to my husband Dan. I am in awe of how I always seem to be running late or at least in a rush. In contrast, I observe my dog Lucy and wonder how she spends so much of her time napping. It does not seem to matter what time of day it is, chances are I will find her curled up somewhere for a nap, saving up her energy for when it counts: alerting me to strange noises; guiding me through the city streets; devouring treats; and playing with her toys. |
